Ingredients

Units Scale
  • For the Salisbury Steak:
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • For the Mushroom Gravy:
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 1 1/2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • Chopped chives for garnish
  • For the Homemade Chips:
  • 3 large russet potatoes, thinly sliced
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • Salt, to taste
  • Optional Sauce:
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 tbsp chopped chives
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Form into oval patties.
  2. Cook patties in a skillet over medium heat until browned and cooked through, about 4–5 minutes per side. Remove and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, melt butter. Sauté onions and mushrooms until tender, about 5–7 minutes.
  4. Sprinkle in flour and stir well. Gradually whisk in beef broth, soy sauce, and mustard. Simmer until thickened.
  5. Return the patties to the skillet and spoon gravy over. Cook for another 2–3 minutes.
  6. For chips, heat oil in a deep pan. Fry potato slices in batches until golden and crisp. Drain and season with salt.
  7. For sauce, mix sour cream, chives, lemon juice, salt, and pepper in a bowl.
  8. Serve Salisbury steak with mushroom gravy, homemade chips, and dipping sauce. Garnish with chopped chives.

Notes

  • Use Yukon Gold potatoes as an alternative for chips for a buttery flavor.
  • Make the gravy ahead of time to save prep time on busy nights.
  • Double the patties and freeze extras for a quick future meal.
  • For a lighter sauce, substitute sour cream with Greek yogurt.
