Description

This Pennsylvania Dutch Apple Pie is a rustic and traditional dessert featuring a buttery homemade crust, a spiced apple filling, and a sweet, crunchy brown sugar crumb topping. Perfect served warm with vanilla ice cream.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • For the crust:
  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cubed
  • 34 tbsp ice water
  • For the filling:
  • 6 cups thinly sliced apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • For the crumb topping:
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cubed

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. To make the crust, combine flour and salt in a bowl. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add ice water, 1 tbsp at a time, until dough comes together.
  3. Roll out dough and fit into a 9-inch pie dish.
  4. In a large bowl, toss sliced apples with granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice.
  5. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared crust.
  6. For the crumb topping, mix flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon in a bowl. Cut in butter until mixture is crumbly.
  7. Sprinkle the crumb topping evenly over the apples.
  8. Bake for 50–60 minutes, or until the topping is golden and the filling is bubbly.
  9. Cool slightly before serving. Optional: serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Notes

  • Granny Smith apples provide tartness while Honeycrisp adds sweetness—use a mix for balanced flavor.
  • Chilling the crust before baking can help it hold its shape better.
  • Place a baking sheet under the pie dish to catch any drips.
  • Can be made a day ahead and gently reheated before serving.
