Scale
- 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp granulated sugar
- 2 tsp salt
- 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 1 cup warm milk (110°F/45°C)
- 1/4 cup warm water
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
- 1 egg (plus 1 for egg wash)
- Optional: sesame seeds or poppy seeds for topping
Instructions
- In a small bowl, dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Add yeast mixture, warm milk, softened butter, and 1 egg. Mix until a soft dough forms.
- Knead dough on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Punch down dough and divide into 6–8 equal pieces. Shape each into a round bun and place on a parchment-lined baking tray.
- Cover loosely and let rise again for 30–40 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush tops with beaten egg and sprinkle with sesame or poppy seeds if using.
- Bake for 15–18 minutes until golden brown. Cool on a wire rack before slicing.
Notes
- Use warm milk and water (not hot) to activate yeast effectively without killing it.
- Let buns cool completely before slicing for best texture.
- Perfect for large burgers or stacked sandwiches.
