- 1 cup (225g) unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup (120ml) whole milk
- Powdered sugar, for dusting
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line an 8-inch square or round cake pan with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 3–5 minutes.
- Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Add dry ingredients to the butter mixture alternately with milk, beginning and ending with the flour. Mix just until combined.
- Pour batter into prepared pan and smooth the top.
- Bake for 40–45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean and the top is golden and crackled.
- Cool completely in the pan. Dust with powdered sugar before slicing and serving.
Notes
- For extra richness, use cake flour instead of all-purpose flour.
- Flavor variations: try almond or citrus zest in place of vanilla.
