Ingredients

  • 1 cup (225g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) whole milk
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line an 8-inch square or round cake pan with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 3–5 minutes.
  3. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Add dry ingredients to the butter mixture alternately with milk, beginning and ending with the flour. Mix just until combined.
  6. Pour batter into prepared pan and smooth the top.
  7. Bake for 40–45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean and the top is golden and crackled.
  8. Cool completely in the pan. Dust with powdered sugar before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • For extra richness, use cake flour instead of all-purpose flour.
